In a direct-injection engine, fuel is sprayed straight into the combustion chamber at high pressure instead of into the intake port. Small amounts of fuel and combustion by-products can reach the oil, especially on short trips where the engine never gets fully warm, and the intake valves no longer get washed by fuel.
