Where a diesel pickup makes its heat

A turbo diesel loses heat not only through the block but also through its intercooled charge air and, on many engines, an exhaust-gas recirculation cooler that runs on engine coolant. That is one reason diesel cooling systems are sensitive to the right coolant: corrosion or scale in a small cooler passage shows up as overheating or as loss of power long before a big leak appears.

Idling on site, then a fast run home

Work pickups often idle for long periods with the air-conditioning on, then drive at motorway speed fully loaded. Both put the radiator, water pump and thermostat through big temperature swings, which is what ages hoses and seals. Squeeze the hoses when cold: hard, cracked or swollen ones are due.

Dust on the cores

Dust and chaff from site roads cake onto the front of the radiator and the condenser. A thin layer you can barely see will already reduce airflow. Cleaning it gently from the engine side during each service is cheap insurance before summer.

Safe level checks

1. Cold engine, pickup level.
2. Read the reservoir or expansion tank between MIN and MAX.
3. Top up only with the specified coolant; water is an emergency measure.
4. Never open the cap while the engine is hot.

If the temperature warning comes on

Stop safely and switch off: an overheated engine can be seriously damaged by driving on, and a diesel head gasket is an expensive repair. Let it cool completely, then check the level. Have the cause found before the pickup goes back to work.
