MG ZS Overheating: Possible Causes on the 1.5 and 1.5T

العربية

Quick answer

If the temperature needle on your MG ZS climbs or a coolant warning lights up, possible causes include a coolant leak from a hose or the expansion tank, a thermostat that sticks shut, a tired water pump, a radiator clogged with dust, or a cooling fan that does not cut in. Pull over safely, switch off and let the engine cool; never open the expansion-tank cap while it is hot. Because MG UAE sells the ZS with either a 1.5 or a 1.5T engine, ShipMyPart reads your VIN before matching any cooling part.

ZS versions covered here

This page is about engine overheating on the current front-wheel-drive MG ZS as listed in MG UAE's brochure. Four grades share one gearbox type but not one engine:

GradeEngine labelRated outputTurbo hardware
STD 1.5 CVT1.5 (shown as 1.5L)110 HPNone listed
COM 1.5 CVT1.5 (shown as 1.5L)110 HPNone listed
COM 1.5T CVT1.5T turbo petrol168 HPTurbo and intercooler
LUX 1.5T CVT1.5T turbo petrol168 HPTurbo and intercooler

Not verified by ShipMyPart: engine codes, the model year printed on the brochure, coolant type, system capacity and replacement interval. Earlier ZS cars imported or sold before this brochure may carry different hardware, so the VIN is the reference.

How a hot ZS usually announces itself

What you see or smellTypical momentWorth noting
Needle above its usual resting pointSlow traffic on a summer afternoonNote whether it drops again once you are moving
Red coolant or temperature lampAny timeTreat as a stop signal, not a reminder
Sweet smell or wisps of steam at the bonnet edgeAfter parkingOften points to an external leak
Warm air from the heater while the gauge reads highIdle or low speedCan indicate low coolant or trapped air
Cabin air suddenly less coldLong idle with A/C onMany cars reduce A/C load when engine temperature rises
Flat response or a warning on a 1.5THard acceleration in heatThe engine may protect itself by limiting power

What may be behind it

Possible causes include the following; none of them can be confirmed without inspection:

  • Coolant loss through a cracked hose, a loose clamp or a split expansion tank. A level that falls without visible drips may also mean an internal fault, which only a workshop can establish.
  • Thermostat stuck closed or partly open, so coolant does not reach the radiator in time, or the engine runs cool on the motorway and hot in town.
  • Water pump wear: a weeping seal, a noisy bearing or a worn impeller that moves less coolant at idle.
  • Radiator restriction, either fine sand packed between the fins on the outside or deposits inside the core.
  • Cooling fan or its control not switching on, which shows up mostly when the car is stationary.
  • A faulty temperature sensor that sends a false reading to the gauge or engine computer.
  • 1.5T only: the turbocharger adds heat under the bonnet. A leaking intercooler or boost pipe is more likely to cost power than to raise coolant temperature, but it is checked on the turbo grades during the same inspection.

Which ZS part becomes a suspect, and when

Part pageIt comes under suspicion when…Applies to
Radiatorthe car runs hot at a standstill but recovers at speed, or the core is weeping at its plastic end tanks1.5 and 1.5T, matched separately
Water pumpthere is a crust or drip near the pump body, or a rising whirr from the front of the enginePer engine
Thermostatwarm-up is very slow, or the gauge swings between normal and hot on the same commutePer engine
Expansion tankthe level keeps falling, the plastic is yellowed or cracked, or the cap seal looks perishedConfirmed by VIN
Hoses and pipesa hose feels spongy when cold, or a joint shows dried coolant residueRouting differs by engine
Temperature sensorthe gauge jumps instantly or disagrees with how the engine is behavingConfirmed by VIN
Intercoolera COM 1.5T or LUX feels flat under boost on hot days, with or without a warning1.5T grades only

Owner checks with the engine cold

  1. Wait until the bonnet is cool to the touch; ideally check before the first drive of the day.
  2. Find the translucent expansion tank and compare the level with its markings without removing the cap.
  3. Look under the front of the car where it was parked overnight for green, pink or orange spots.
  4. Run a hand-torch along the visible hoses for white crust, damp patches or swollen ends.
  5. Look through the grille for leaves, plastic bags or packed sand on the radiator face.
  6. On the next drive, watch where the needle normally sits and whether the fan can be heard after a hot stop.

Topping up is only for a cold system and only with the coolant MG specifies; mixing types is a common source of later trouble.

Stop, diagnose soon, or monitor

LevelSituationWhat to do
Stop nowRed warning lamp, needle at the top, steam, or a sudden power cutPull over safely, switch off, do not reopen the hot cap, arrange recovery if it repeats after cooling
Diagnose soonCoolant level drops between checks, needle creeps up in trafficHave the cooling system pressure-tested by a qualified workshop before a long trip
MonitorOne-off rise on an extreme day that settles when movingNote time, speed and outside heat; recheck the level cold the next morning

Continuing to drive an overheating engine can damage the head gasket and cylinder head, which costs far more than a hose or thermostat.

Why UAE use is hard on a ZS cooling system

The ZS is a compact crossover that does most of its work in city traffic: queues on Sheikh Zayed Road, school pickups and long waits with the A/C at full. At walking pace the radiator depends almost entirely on the fan, while the condenser in front of it is dumping cabin heat at the same time. Fine sand and summer insects build up on both cores and cut airflow little by little, so a car that coped last year can struggle this year. On the 1.5T grades, heat soak after a hard drive and a short stop adds to the load.

From workshop finding to the right ZS part

Once a workshop has pointed at a component, the remaining risk is ordering the version for the wrong ZS engine. The registration card shows the 17-character VIN; a photo of it on WhatsApp, or the number typed into the quote form, is all ShipMyPart needs to tell an STD or COM 1.5 from a COM 1.5T or LUX. Add the workshop note (for example "thermostat housing leaking" or "radiator end tank cracked") and say whether you also want clamps, the tank cap or a fresh supply of coolant. You receive a quote for the matched parts, and delivery is arranged to your address or workshop anywhere in the UAE. Coolant type and refill notes are kept on the separate MG ZS coolant page.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my MG ZS run hot only in traffic?

Heat that appears at idle and disappears on the move often points to airflow: a fan that is not switching on, or a radiator face blocked with dust. A workshop can confirm which.

Is it safe to keep driving with the temperature light on?

No. Stop safely, switch off and let the engine cool. Driving on can damage the engine.

Can I open the ZS expansion tank when it is hot?

No. The system is under pressure and hot coolant can spray out. Wait until the engine is fully cold.

Do the 1.5 and 1.5T ZS use the same radiator?

Do not assume so. The two engines can use different cooling parts, so we match the radiator to your VIN.

Does the intercooler fit every ZS?

No. Only the 1.5T grades (COM 1.5T and LUX) have the turbo and intercooler.

Can ShipMyPart send cooling parts for my ZS?

Yes. Send the VIN; we identify the version, match the parts and quote with UAE delivery.
